Review: A Cowgirl Remembers When

A Cowgirl Remembers WhenA Cowgirl Remembers When by Dawn Nelson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

"A Cowgirl Remembers When" by Dawn Nelson was a good read, and I enjoyed it. I am very happy that I was chosen to receive it from the Goodreads First Reads Program.

This book is a collection of adventure stories the author remembers from her childhood, teenage years and beginning of adulthood that involved her family, friends, horses and other pets. To western fans out there, this is a true read.

Personally, I’ve never really been exposed to the range or the life of a cowgirl, and I really appreciate the fact that Ms. Nelson paints a pretty vivid picture of it for her reader.

She does a great job of staging her words for the reader, making them feel as if they are rolling and tumbling down the hills with her, and I could almost feel the barbed wire as if it were being taken from my leg when she described, in her story "Pain Cow," how she pulled a string of barb wire from her leg. Some other stories that I really enjoyed were "The Escape," "Horse Thief," and "A Lost Soul."

The writing was okay, but the great imagery that Ms. Nelson lays out for her readers really bumped it up a notch.

I would recommend this book to others and would be open to reading other books from the author.

I give it 4 stars.
